Pain in your lower back that travels into your hip or leg can feel worrying. Many people assume it’s sciatica — but that isn’t always the case.
True sciatica usually involves irritation of the sciatic nerve and may include:
- Sharp or burning pain down one leg
- Pins and needles or numbness
- Pain below the knee
- Possible weakness
If you notice progressive weakness or bowel/bladder changes, medical assessment is essential.
However, many cases are muscular. Tight glutes, piriformis trigger points, hamstring restriction or lower back guarding can refer pain down the leg and closely mimic sciatica.
At Days Mill Treatments in Nailsworth, I assess range of motion, nerve sensitivity and movement patterns to identify whether symptoms are nerve-related or muscular.
Treatment may include:
- Trigger point therapy
- Myofascial release
- Gentle mobility work
- Simple strengthening advice
The goal is to reduce irritation and restore natural movement — not just ease symptoms temporarily.
If you’re unsure what’s driving your back and leg pain, a clinical assessment can provide clarity.
